Biography

Aaron Patton Talent was born May 18, 1836 at Blount County, Tennessee, United States; the son of Aaron Tallent and Bethenia Anderson.[1]

In 1860, when he was 24 years of age, his name can be found in The Tennessee census at Roane County, Tennessee. He is doing farming and carpentry work. Also listed are his wife Martha A.; children Nancy J. and William A.; also perhaps a brother age 25, William A. Talent.[2]He was married in Tennessee in 1857.[1]

From 1861 to 1865 Aaron fought on the Union side in the Civil War in the 1st Regiment, Tennessee Mounted Infantry. He entered as a Private and his final rank was Sergeant.[3]He served as quartermaster of the First Tennessee Calvary.[1]

Aaron is living in Knox County, Tennessee by the 1870 census when he is 34 years old. Martha, his wife is 32 years of age and children are Nancy age 15, William age 12, John age 9, Segawney age 5, Margaret age 3, and James age 0. Also found on this record are James Talent and John Smith, farm hands.[4]

A voter registration is found for Aaron on July 30, 1898 at 1311 Broderick, San Francisco, California. The original form reveals that John Tate Talent was living at the same location, possibly his son.[5]

In 1900, at age 64, Aaron P. Talent is located at Talent, Jackson County, Oregon with family: Wife Martha A. age 61, Minnie B. age 23 b. in 1877 at Oregon, Myrtle age 19 b. in 1881at Oregon. grandson Alford P. age 12 b. 1887 in Oregon, grandson Percy R. age 10 b 1889 in Oregon, granddaughter Myrtle age 7 b. 1892 in Oregon.[6]He was a founder of Talent, Jackson County, Oregon, according to a newspaper article dated June 14. The article states, "... He was one of the few early residents of Southern Oregon who had the foresight to see the great future of this section, and consequently secured a large tract of land where the city that bears his name now stands on what was then called Wagner Creek." He was the first postmaster; thereason why the postal authorities changed the town name from Wagner Creek to Talent.

By 1910 Aaron and Martha had moved to Medford, Ward 2, Jackson, Oregon. Aaron is 75 years and Martha is 71,[7]where they lived for eleven years, "a highly respected and progressive citizen.[1]

Aaron P. Talent was granted a pension from the United States government from 1907 - 1933, with his wife Martha A. Talent as the beneficiary. According to the Veteran's Administration, he died May 26, 1913[8]at Medford, Jackson County, Oregon. He was buried at Ashland Cemetery in Ashland, Jackson, Oregon.[1]

His widow, Martha A. died May 31, 1925 and was buried in the same plot as her husband.[1]
