Biography

Mary was born about 1834. She passed away about 1863.

Confusion exists about whether her maiden name was Clark or Tankersley; I have seen reports of both and she is presently listed as Clark. I need to find out how to change that.

A Mary Tankersley (b. abt 1835 in Alabama) is found in the 1850 Census of Lavaca County, Texas, in the family of Green "Tankersly" (farmer, 53, b. Tenn) and Emily Tankersley (45, b. Tenn.)

I have found a marriage record for a Mary K. Tankersley to Daniel C. Clark in Rusk County, 1850. I can't find much on Daniel C. Clark after 1850, so I believe he died shortly after his marriage to Mary Tankersley and before the 1854 marriage to Fanning, hence references to her name as Mary Clark Tankersley or Mary Clark Fanning after her marriage to Isaac Fanning in 1854.

A Texas marriage record indicates Isaac Fanning married Mary C. Clark on 28 September 1854 in Hopkins Co, Texas. FHL Film Number: 1298847

The 1860 Census of Erath Co, Texas lists Isaac Fanning (farmer, 27, born Alabama) with wife Mary C. (27, born Alabama) and two daughters, Miranda (4, born in Texas) and Isabella (3, born in Texas).

A (flawed) Texas death certificate for Miranda Pearl Hampton offers confirmation about Mary Clark Fanning's maiden name (whether Clark or Tankersley)...I believe Miranda Pearl (Fanning) Hampton to be the daughter of Isaac Fanning and Mary C. (Tankersley) Fanning. Miranda Hampton was born December 17, 1855, same as Miranda Fanning (Dec 1855) in Pickton, Texas; father reported on death certificate was Isaac Hampton [I believe this is just an error by the reporter or the recorder. Cause of death related to senility, so details may be questionable. Mother's name reported as unknown Tankersley.
