Biography

Benjamin graduated from the Medical Department of the University of Pennsylvania in 1836. After working in Paris, France and Ecuador, he returned to Steubenville, Ohio in 1840 where he practiced medicine until his death.

He married (first) Oella ('Della') Stanton in May 1838. They had five children:[1]

  1. Benjamin (b-1841, d-1866)
  2. Nancy (b-1843) married Houston
  3. David Stanton (b-1845)
  4. Lucy (b-1847)
  5. James (b-1850)

About 1854, Oella and Benjamin separated. In 1856, Benjamin married (second) Helen Rowan. Benjamin and Helen did not have any children and she died before 1860. In 1860, Benjamin married (third) Nancy Lowther. They had 10 children:[2]

  1. Nancy (b-1861, d-1872)
  2. William (b-1863)
  3. Isabella (b-1864)
  4. Charles Avery (b-1866, d-1897)
  5. Benjamin died in infancy
  6. Franklin Sawyer died in infancy
  7. Helen (b-1870)
  8. Robert died in infancy
  9. Margaret (b-1875)
  10. Mary (b-1877)
