Biography

Eli was born in 1824. He is the son of Benjamin Tappan. He studied law with his father and his father's partner, Edwin M. Stanton. He was mayor of Steubenville in 1844-1845, superintendent of schools in 1856-1859, professor of mathematics in the University of Ohio, 1859-1860 and 1865-1868. and he was president of Kenyon College, Gambier, Ohio, 1869-1875.[1]

He married Lydia McDowell. They had two children:[2]

  1. Mary (b-1851) married Wright
  2. Charles (b-1853)

Eli died in 1888.
