Biography

According to Census Records, Clarissa Tedder was born in Alabama between 1817 and 1835.[1][2][3][4][5] She was the daughter of Isaac Tedder and Elizabeth Sullivan. Clarissa's daughter, Ora (Roney) Keith's death record lists her parents as George Roney and Clarissa Tedda.[6] So we know Clarissa was a "Tedder". We also know from the 1830 census that Isaac and Elizabeth had two daughters born between 1816 and 1824 (one of whom was their daughter Margaret). And in 1860, Clarissa and her family lived next to Isaac and Elizabeth, suggesting such a relationship. [7] On 30 May 1838, she married George W. Roney in Washington Co., AL.[8][9]

Clarissa and George had eight children:

  1. Margaret Roney (1840-1916);[10] m. 1) 1859, James J. Sullivan;[11] 2) 1869, John N. Keith[9]
  2. John E. Roney (1843- )
  3. Mary Roney (1845-Aft. 1920);[12] m. 1865, Elijah Parnell[13][9]
  4. Isaac Roney (c.1846- ); m. 4 Dec 1879, Melissa Ray[14]
  5. Orra Isabelle Roney (c.1848-1921);[6] m. 12 Jul 1870, William H. Keith[11]
  6. Rebecca Roney (1851-1924);[15] m. 17 Oct 1872, John W. Wheat[14]
  7. George W. Roney, Jr. (c.1854-1923);[16] m. 26 Jul 1877, Katherine Ray[14]
  8. Clara A. Roney (1858-1942);[17] m. 23 Mar 1876, Christopher Columbus Sullivan[14]

They seem to have spent their lives in Washington Co., AL. On 10 Sep 1861, Clarissa purchased 240 acres of land in St. Stephens.[18][19] Her husband George was still alive and it is curious that Clarissa purchased the land in her own name. in 1880, she is listed as a widow in the Census and she is living with her son Isaac (Ike) and his wife, Melissa.[4] Clarissa's date of death is unknown, but she still living in the home of her son Isaac in 1900; she was 80 years old.[5]

Research Notes

There are two marriage records that refer to Clarissa "Smith" marrying George W. Ronie: one for 30 May 1838,[11] and one for 7 Jul 1838.[14] In the 1850 census, there is a 14-year-old William Smith living with Clarissa and George. Clarissa might have been married at a young age prior to her marriage to George Roney. There is a Clary Teddo of Washington Co., AL who married William L. Smith on 14 Feb 1833.[14] If this is our Clarissa, she would have been 16 years old at the time of this marriage.

Margaret Roney's grandmother, Elizabeth Sullivan was the sister of James' father Stephen C. Sullivan; they were 1st cousins, once removed. Elizabeth was also sister to Cornelius Sullivan, whose son, Christopher C. Sullivan married her granddaughter, Clara Roney; they too were 1st cousins, once removed.
