Jac. P. Thijsse was a dutch writer, teacher and conservationist. He was esspecially known for his contributions to nature education, field biology and natural history.

Birth

Jac was born as Jacobus Pieter Thijsse in Maasstricht, Limburg, Nederland on 25 july 1865 in the commanding officers house of the "tweede regiment infanterie" St Pietersstr. 2651. He was the son of Jacobus Thijsse and Catharina Johanna Priester. [1] His father was a soldier (sergeant) so they moved quite a lot. On 29 april 1868 they moved from Maastricht to Grave, Noord-Brabant. They lived in Grave for two years in a house with multiple gardens, which Jac remembered his whole life. In 1870 they had to move into the fortress Grave itself because of the mobilization caused by the French-German war. In 1873 they moved to Woerden, Utrecht. His father left the military part in the army to accept a civilian job, still with the army. In 1877 the fortress Woerden was abolished and his father got a job in Amsterdam as a clerk.

Education

Ko went to the primary school in Woerden. He could already read and write when he started, so he was advanced to the third year immediately Between 1879 and 1883 he went to the municipal training college in Amsterdam to become a primary school teacher, specializing in natural history. After a few years teaching in Amsterdam he got a job at the French school in Den Burg on the isle of Texel.

Marriage

While working and living on Texel he married his training college sweatheart Helena Christina Petronella Bosch.[2] They left Texel when his wife started to feel homesick. They went back to Amsterdam were he became headteacher at the "openbare school aan de Passeerdersgracht". Due to health reasons, they moved to Parkweg 4, Bloemendaal in 1902, although he kept teaching in Amsterdam until 1921. After which he started teaching "natuurlijke histories" at Kennemer Lyceum in Bloemendaal, as well as "plant- en dierkunde" at the neighbouring Middelbare Meisjesschool 't Kopje. He retired in 1930.

He passed away in 1945.
