Ida Catherine Thompson was born on December 31, 1866 in Kentucky, United States, daughter of John Jennings Thompson (1841–1921) and Mary Elizabeth Gentry (1846–1878).
Ida married Henry F. Simpson (born in 1870 in Kentucky; son of Elijah Simpson and Celia (Gentry) Simpson). Their children were:
- Myrtle Simpson (1887–1915)
- Mary Anna Simpson (1891– )
