Sarah (Thompson) James was born in Hull, Yorkshire, England.

Early Life

1846 Birth: Sarah was born on the 25 February 1846 at 53 English Street, Myton, Hull, East Yorkshire, England (a Grocery Shop). Her father was Thomas Thompson and her mother was Hannah (Mosley) Thompson. Thomas's profession is described as a bookkeeper. Sarah's birth was registered in the Jan-Feb-Mar quarter of 1846 in the Kingston upon Hull district.^[1]

1851 Census: In 1851 the family are living at 51 English Street, Myton, Kingston upon Hull, East Yorkshire, England. Sarah is 5 years old, at school and born in Hull. Her father Thomas 52, is a Clerk at an Engine Works and born in Snaith. Her mother is a grocer, tea dealer and beer retailer. She has 2 older brothers and 3 older sisters. Her mother will have occupied 53 English Street where she ran a Grocery Shop.^[2]

1861 Census: In 1861, the family are still living at 51 English Street, Hull, East Yorkshire, England. Sarah is 15 and still at school. Her father is 62, a bookkeeper and was born in Airmyn near Goole. Her mother Hannah 58, born Swinefleet also near Goole, still runs the Grocery shop at 53 English Street. She is also living with her 3 old sisters, Hannah (widow), Mary and Jane who are classified as servants (probably working in the Grocery shop) and an older brother, John an Engine fitter. ^[3]

1868 Death of Mother: Her mother Hannah (Mosley) Thompson died on the 5 October 1868 at 8 John Street, Hull.

Marriage and Children

1870 Marriage: Sarah 24, married Charles Clark James 27, a sailmaker on the 29 October 1870, at St Stephens Church, Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire, England. Sarah is living 15 Walmsley Street, Hull, aged 25 and a spinster. ^[4]

1871 Census: In 1871, Sarah and Charles are living at 17 Day Street, South Myton, Hull, East Yorkshire, England after about 6 months of marriage. She is 25 and it states she is born in Hull. Charles is 28, a sailmaker born in Middlesex, London. ^[5]

1872 Birth of Daughter: Their daughter Lucy (James) Smith was born in 25 March 1872 in Hull.

1874 Birth of Son: Their son Walter James was born in the January quarter 1874 in Hull.

1876 Death of Father: Her father Thomas Thompson died on the 12 June 1876 in Hull.

1881 Census: By 1881 they are now living at 9 Charlotte Terrace, Clarendon Street, Myton, Hull, East Yorkshire. Sarah is a wife and aged 34, born Hull. Her husband is shop chandler and sailmaker aged 37, born London. They have 2 children, Lucey aged 9 and Walter 7, both at school. ^[6]

1881 Birth of Daughter: Their second daughter Ethel (James) Hutchinson was born on the 7 June 1881, at 9 Charlotte Terrace, Clarendon Street, Myton, Hull, East Yorkshire.

1891 Census: At the time of the 1891 census they were living at 48 Windsor Street, Holy Trinity, Myton, Hull, East Yorkshire. Sarah is 45 and her husband Charles is 49 and a Ships Chandlers Clerk. They have 3 children, Lucey 19 and Walter 17 at home and Ethel 9 at school. ^[7]

1901 Census: By 1901 they are living at 36 Devingham Street, Hull. Sarah is 55, born in Hull and her husband Charles is 60 and a Ship Chandler’s Manager, born on City Road, London. Their son Walter is 27 and living with them and a local corporation rates collector. ^[8]

Later Life

1911 Census: On 2 April 1911, they are living 2 Lee Road, Withernsea, East Yorkshire. Sarah is 65, born in Hull and her husband Charles is 69, a retired Ships Chandlers Manager, born in Bow, London. Their son Walter is 37 and living with them and a Hull corporation rate collector. ^[9]

1921 Census: In the 1921 census Sarah (age 75), Home Duties, was the wife of Charles Clark James at 17 Princess Street, Withernsea, Yorkshire (East Riding), England.^[10]

1922 Death of Son: Their son Walter James died in 1922 at the age of 48.

1927 Death of husband: Her husband Charles Clark James died on 23 September 1927, at 23 St Georges Street Kingston upon Hull, East Yorkshire, England aged 87 and 56 years of marriage.

1933 Death: Sarah died on the 26 January 1933, at 23 St Georges Street Kingston upon Hull, East Yorkshire, England aged 86, the widow of Charles Clark James, a Ship Chandler. She died of Broncho-pneumonia and senility, her daughter Ethel was in attendance when she died. This address is the home of her daughter Ethel (James) Hutchinson (1881-1953). ^[11]

1933 Burial: Sarah was buried on the 28 January 1933 in Hull General Cemetery, Spring Bank West, Hull in Comp 159 Grave 27000. Included in images is the location in the cemetery were she is buried with her husband Charles Clark James. There is no headstone identifying the exact location as the cemetery is overgrown and more like a nature reserve. ^[12][13]
