1838 Birth: Mary Ella was born in February 1838 in Hull, East Yorkshire. She was the daughter of Thomas Thompson and Hannah Mosley. She was christened at Holy Trinity Church, King's Square, Hull on the 28 February 1838. [1]
1841 Census: In the 1841 census Mary (age 3) was living on English Street, Holy Trinity, Yorkshire, England. Thomas her father was 40 and a clerk and Hannah her mother is 35 and they have 5 other children, Elizabeth 12, Ann 10, Thomas 9, Hannah 7 and John Mosley 10 months.[2]

1851 Census: In the 1851 census Mary (age 13), at school, is living with her family at 51 English Street, Kingston upon Hull, Holy Trinity, Yorkshire. Her father Thomas Thompson is 52 and a clerk at an Engine Works and her mother Hannah is 49 and a grocer, tea dealer and beer retarder. Her siblings at home are Thomas 19 an apprentice engineer, Hannah 17 is a servant, John 11, Jane 7 and Sarah 5 are at school. Her eldest sister Elizabeth 21, married and a dressmaker[3]
1861 Census: In the 1861 census Mary (age 22) and a servant and the family are still living on English Street, Kingston upon Hull. They still occupy no.51 but they also occupy no.53 which is now her mother Hannah's Grocery shop were Mary Ella probably helps her run it and classified as a servant. Her father Thomas is 62, and a bookkeeper. The other children living with them are Hannah 27 who had been married but now widowed and Jane 17, unmarried are also servants. The youngest child Sarah is 15 and still at school. [4]
1864 Marriage: Mary married Ralph James (abt.1836-1880) on the 6 February 1864 at Holy Trinity Church, Hull. Mary was 24 and Ralph was 26. [5]
Ralph and Mary Ella moved to Ripon in 1864/1865 as their first child was born there in 1865.

1868 Death of Mother:
On the 29 October 1870, her sister Sarah (Thompson) James married the brother of her husband Charles Clark James at St Stephens Church in Hull.
1871 Census: In 1871, Mary Ella is 33 and the family are living on Queen Street in Ripon, Yorkshire. Her husband Ralph is 35 and a master ironmonger. They have 3 children Thomas 6, Mary Ella. 4 both at school and Henry 2, all the children were born in Ripon. [6]

Her husband's mother Ann (Clark) James moved up to Ripon from Hull to live sometime after the 1871 census.
1876 Death of Father: Her father Thomas Thompson died on the 12 June 1876 at 80 Adelaide Street, Kingston upon Hull, he was 77 and her sister Hannah was present.
1878 Death of Mother in law: His mother Ann (Clark) James died on the 30 March 1878 at Skelgarth Cottages, Skelgarth, Ripon, Yorkshire.
1878 Death of son: Her eldest son Thomas Edgar James died on the 24 Jun 1878 at the age of 13. [7]
1880 Death of Husband: Her husband Ralph James died on the 26 January 1880 in Ripon at the age 43 and ironmonger, when Mary Ella was 41 and they had 5 children.
He was buried at St Wilfrid Cathedral, Ripon. His probate was issued on the 7 April 1880 at Wakefield, Yorkshire. The executor was Charles Clark James, his brother and a sailmaker. His husband's estate was valued at not more than £3,000 (which had equivalent purchasing power in 2017 of £198,554
1881 Census: In the 1881 census Mary (age 41), is stated to be a retired Ironmonger and was a widow and head of the household at 8 Kirkgate, Ripon, Yorkshire, England. She had 4 children all at school and born in Ripon, Mary Ella 13, Henry 11, Florence 9, and Ralph Clark 6. There house appears to be attached to the Ironmongers as on the same premises are 3 ironmongers.[8]
1891 Census: In the 1891 census Mary (age 53) was in Ripon, Ripon, Yorkshire, England.[9]
1901 Census: In the 1901 census Mary (age 60) was in York, Ripon, Yorkshire, England.[10]
1911 Census: In the 1911 census Mary (age 70) was the widowed head of household at 12 Westbourne Grove Ripon, Ripon, England.[11]
1921 Census: In the 1921 census Mary (age 83) was the widowed mother of Mary Ella James at 27 Hutton Avenue, West Hartlepool, Durham, England.[12]

1922 Death: Mary died on 15 January 1922 at 27 Hutton Avenue, West Hartlepool, Durham, England at the age of 83.
She was buried in Ripon, Harrogate Borough, North Yorkshire, England with her husband Ralph. [13]
Her estate passed probate on 9 February 1922 in London, England and the value of the estate £433 5s and went to to her son Ralph Clark James, a clerk.[14]
