Biography
Charles Ray Throp was born January 12, 1887 in Portland, Jay, Indiana. He died August 13, 1969 in Winter Park, Orange, Florida at age 82.
Son of Tunis Wesley Throp (1842-1911) and Martha Jane Wright (1848-1924).
1900 United States Census, Wayne Township, Jay, Indiana: Tunis Throp is head of household, a tinner, age 58, with wife Martha J. age 52, and children Edith age 18 working as a clerk in a store, and Charles R. age 13.
Charles was a quiet person smoked cigars and cigarettes, and was not very well, generally. In 1942 when he registered for the WWI draft at age 55, he was 5'8" tall and weighed 175 lbs., blue eyes, brown hair, and had a ruddy complexion.
1st marriage: Charles Ray Throp married Ruby Estell Van Horn on September 23, 1905 in Randolph, Indiana.
Children:
Robert Wesley "Bob" Throp (1907-1990).
Edith Bernell "Bee" Throp (1916-1986).
1910 United States Census, Decatur, Adams, Indiana: Charles Throp is head of household, a shipping clerk at a factory age 23, with wife Ruby Throp age 22, and son Robert age 3. Also in the home is Ruby's mother, Emma Van Horn age 58.
1920 United States Census, Allen, Indiana: Charles Throp is head of household, a packer in electric works, age 33, with wife Ruby Throp age 32, and children Robert age 19, and Bernell age 3. Also in the home is Ruby's mother, Emma D. Van Horn age 67.
1930 United States Census, Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California: Charles Throp is head of household, an out shipping clerk in a furniture factory, age 43, with wife Ruby Throp age 42 and daughter Bernell age 13.
1940 United States Census, Los Angeles, California: Jesse Throp is head of household age 72, with wife Elizabeth W. Throp age 70, and Jesse's brother Charles R. Throp, a house painter, age 53.
2nd marriage: Charles Ray Throp married Nora Ellen David (Cline) Van Horn in 1941 in Denver, Colorado. She was the widow of Earl Van Horn, his first wife's brother.
Bob Throp remembers Nora as first his aunt, and then his step-mother.
Nora and Charles died within a day of each other. There was a double funeral. Nora had been in a coma in Los Angeles, while Charles was in Florida visiting his daughter, Bernell, wen he had two heart attacks. The second attack killed him.
Charles and Nora are buried next to each other in Inglewood, California.
