Tunis Wesley Throp was born August 27, 1842 in Palestine, Darke, Ohio. He died suddenly of a heart attack on March 21, 1911 in Portland, Jay, Indiana at age 68.
Son of Samuel Wicoff Throp (1819-1888) and Catherine Vanderveer (1816-1892).

Throp age 14, Tunis W. Throp age 8, Judiah W. Throp age 6, Benjamin N. Throp age 4 and Hanah A. Throp age 2.
1860 United States Census, Greenville Township, Darke, Ohio (June 5, 1860): Benjamin L. Lane is head of household, a farmer age 36, with wife Sarah Lane age 32, and children Eleanor R. Lane age 8, James F. Lane age 5, Gilbert Lane age 3, and Margaret A. Lane age 4 months. Also in the home is Tunis W. Throp age 18.

Throp age 17, Benjamin Throp age 14, H. A. Throp age 13, O. W. Throp age 10, William W. Throp age 7, Flora Throp age 5, and Aaron D. age 4 months.
Tunis Wesley Throp married Martha Jane Wright on December 17, 1865 at Portland, Jay County, Indiana.

1900 United States Census, Wayne Township, Jay, Indiana: Tunis Throp is head of household, a tinner, age 58, with wife Martha J. age 52, and children Edith age 18 working as a clerk in a store, and Charles R. age 13.
1910 United States Census, Portland, Jay, Indiana: Tunis Throp is head of household, a tinner, age 67, with wife Martha age 62, and children Edith age 27 working as a saleswoman in a dry goods store.
At age 18, Tunis enlisted in the 39th Indiana infantry for the Civil War. The 39th was renamed in about 1860 to the 8th Indiana Calvary. Tunis and his brother, Judiah, served together in Ohio units before joining the 8th Indiana Cavalry. When they were in the 8th Indiana Cavalry, Tunis was seriously wounded in the leg during a cavalry raid around Atlanta when a bullet passed through his knee. Tunis was hospitalized until he was "mustered out." He then returned home to recover, then returned to the war. Tunis served until the war ended.
One source incorrectly shows him as Francis W. Throp on one document, [Company G of the 44th Regiment of Ohio Volunteers] which also describes him as five feet seven inches, dark complexion, grey eyes and light hair, by occupation a farmer....Hospitalized with hepatization of the left lung following measles contracted at Meadow Bluffs, Virginia. Treated at hospitals in Meadow Bluffs, then Galia River, VA, then Charleston, [West?] Virginia then Gallipolis Ohio.. Discharged as unfit for duty at Gallipolis Ohio October 6, 1862. Entered Brown General Hospital, Louisville KY Nov 20, 1864 with flesh wound lower third left thigh, rec'd at Marietta Georgia Oct 13, 1864 . Entered General Hosp at Madison Indiana Nov 29, 1864. Was furloughed Feb 24, 1865, returned Mar 29, 1865 and was discharged June 12, 1865.
Company Muster Rolls also show him as Thropp and Throppe. (Some of data from Jack's letter to Herman dated 4 Sept. 1978. See notes for Judiah for their common military service. Tunis became a tinsmith and spent the remainder of his life in Portland, Indiana, Jay County, working at the Fulton Bros. Hardware Store for 14 years. (let. from Jack to Herman - 4 Sept. 1978) in 1862.
William Throp (Sept. 1976), “The home of grandfather Throp on Walnut Street has been remodeled several times and of course does not look as it did when they lived there. There is now a large parking lot to the west for the Catholic church across the street. Tunis and Martha were living in that house when Chet Throp was born in 1898.”
Tunis’ sister, Flora, was a saloon entertainer. Because Tunis was ashamed of Flora, he was very strict while raising his only daughter, Edith.
Paul Throp (1976) said that Jesse Throp always said that our family came over on the Mayflower.
Boyhood spent on farm, apprenticed as tinner at age 16, at Greenville, Ohio. Wounded October 13, 1864 in left knee which disabled him to a great extent until his death. He was a charter member of GAR Dept. of Indiana. Stephen J. Bailey Post, faithful comrade for 28 year. Filled several offices and commander for 2 years. Served 2 terms on City Council, Portland, Indiana, from 1st Ward. Services held at Presbyterian Church. The obituary was read by a member of his military unit, L.L. Gilput.
