At age 18, Tunis enlisted in the 39th Indiana infantry for the Civil War. The 39th was renamed in about 1860 to the 8th Indiana Calvary. Tunis and his brother, Judiah, served together in Ohio units before joining the 8th Indiana Cavalry. When they were in the 8th Indiana Cavalry, Tunis was seriously wounded in the leg during a cavalry raid around Atlanta when a bullet passed through his knee. Tunis was hospitalized until he was "mustered out." He then returned home to recover, then returned to the war. Tunis served until the war ended.

One source incorrectly shows him as Francis W. Throp on one document, [Company G of the 44th Regiment of Ohio Volunteers] which also describes him as five feet seven inches, dark complexion, grey eyes and light hair, by occupation a farmer....Hospitalized with hepatization of the left lung following measles contracted at Meadow Bluffs, Virginia. Treated at hospitals in Meadow Bluffs, then Galia River, VA, then Charleston, [West?] Virginia then Gallipolis Ohio.. Discharged as unfit for duty at Gallipolis Ohio October 6, 1862. Was furloughed Feb 24, 1865, returned Mar 29, 1865 and was discharged June 12, 1865.

Company Muster Rolls also show him as Thropp and Throppe. (Some of data from Jack's letter to Herman dated 4 Sept. 1978. See notes for Judiah for their common military service. Tunis became a tinsmith and spent the remainder of his life in Portland, Indiana, Jay County, working at the Fulton Bros. Hardware Store for 14 years. (let. from Jack to Herman - 4 Sept. 1978) in 1862.

William Throp (Sept. 1976), “The home of grandfather Throp on Walnut Street has been remodeled several times and of course does not look as it did when they lived there. There is now a large parking lot to the west for the Catholic church across the street. Tunis and Martha were living in that house when Chet Throp was born in 1898.”

Tunis’ sister, Flora, was a saloon entertainer. Because Tunis was ashamed of Flora, he was very strict while raising his only daughter, Edith.

Paul Throp (1976) said that Jesse Throp always said that our family came over on the Mayflower.
