Albert Thurgood was born in the Colony of Victoria (1851-1900)
Albert John Thurgood was born in January 1874 at or about North Melbourne in the Colony of Victoria. He was the son of John Thurgood and his wife Amelia Mary (nee Buckland). He was educated at Brighton Grammar School.
Albert John Thurgood was an Australian Rules footballer in the early days of Victorian Football Association (VFA), Victorian Football League (VFL) and the Western Australian Football Association (WAFA). In a career spanning from 1892-1906 and at least 150 games across the 3 leagues. He was described by Australian Rules historian John Devaney as:
... an all round football champion of the highest order, and arguably the game's first true 'superstar'.
After his retirement from football, Albert Thurgood became active in horse racing. Originally as a bookmaker, then later as as an owner. He ran a number of successful horses, including Amazonia, which won the Bagot Handicap in 1921 and was placed third in the Melbourne Cup that year.
He passed away in 1927 as a result of a motor accident and was laid to rest at the Brighton General Cemetery, Caulfield South, Victoria, Australia.
