Andreas, son of Gallus Tischhauser and Katharina Indermaur, was born in Sevelen, current-day St. Gallen, Switzerland on 16 December 1831 and christened two days later in the local Reformed church.
After a nearly three months journey, Andreas arrived at the port of New Orleans on 2 June 1845 aboard the 'Columbia' as part of the first 'group' migration from the village of Sevelen. He travelled with his parents and siblings Mathias, Gallus, Johannes, Anna, Gabriel, Hans Peter, Ursula and Katharina.[1]In 1850, he was living in Tete Des Morts township, Jackson county, Iowa and worked as a labourer. He is enumerated with his mother Katharina, brothers John, Gabriel and Peter as well as sisters Josephine [Ursula] and Catharine.[2]
In 1860, he lived in Jefferson Township, Dubuque, Iowa. He was a farmer and was enumerated with his mother Catherine, and siblings Ursula and Catherina. [3]
