Her parents were Clerk to the Collector of Excise, Philip (Torrance) and Marjory (Knight), who married on the 25 June 1814 at the Parish Church of St. Giles, High Street, in the Cathedral City of Elgin, to the south of the River Lossie, Royal Burgh of Elgin, in Morayshire, Scotland[2].

Marriage Record
JACK and TORRANCE. July 22nd 1840. After being contracted and their matrimonial banns publicly intimated in the Parish of Church of Elgin, William Jack, Esquire, merchant in Elgin and Miss Margaret Torrance, eldest daughter of the late Mr. Philip Torrance, Elgin, were married here by the Revd. Alexander Walker, before a competent number of witnesses[5].
Margaret first appears with the 1851 Census living with her husband William (Jack); their children Mary, Philip, Alexander and Elizabeth Jane (Jack); and House Servants, Margaret (Sime), Janet (McDonald), Betsy (Milne) and Betsy (Anderson). Their address is 23 High Street, in the Town of Elgin, Royal Borough of Elgin, Morayshire, Scotland[6]. By 1861, she is living with her husband William; their children Mary, John, May Helen, Alexander, Elizabeth Jane, William, Harold, Henrietta Isabella, Margaret and Robina (Jack); Domestic Servant/Nurse, Helen (Sutherland); Domestic Servant/Cook, Isabella (Craig). Domestic Servant/Laundry Maid Ann (Sutherland) and Domestic Servant/House Maid, Ann (Anderson). They are still at 25 High Street, in the Town of Elgin, Morayshire, Scotland[7].
Death
Margaret (Torrance) passes away on the14 September 1870 at 12.50am at 5 Lamb Street, Bishopmill, in the Cathedral City of Elgin, to the south of the River Lossie, Royal Burgh of Elgin, in Morayshire, Scotland. The cause of his death was Phthisis (For Years) and she was 51 years old at the time of her passing. Her son, William (Jack) was present at the death and was the informant[8].
Burial
She is interred sometime after the 15 September 1870 at Elgin Cathedral Churchyard, King Street, in the City of Elgin, on the Moray Firth, in Morayshire, Scotland[9].

Sacred to the Memory of WILLIAM JACK Merchant in Elgin who died the 22nd March 1864 in the 58th Year of his Age. Also of his wife MARGARET JACK who died 14th September 1870 Aged 51 Years. And of their Children HENRIETTA CHARLOTTE who died 15th January 1856 in her 2nd Year. ISABELLA CATHERINE her Twin Sister who died on the 29th February 1856 in her 2nd Year. HENRIETTA ISABELLA who died 14 May 1863 Aged 6 Years. ROBINA who died 2nd August 1915 Aged 56 Years.
