Biography

This profile is part of the Torrey Name Study.

Micajah was born 27 July 1673 to Micajah Torrey and Susannah (Unknown) Torrey. Like his father, Deacon Micajah Torrey, has this title prefixed to his name in the records and upon his grave- stone. In his administration papers he is recorded as “Husbandman.” According to sources, Micajah, Jr. led an uneventful life as a farmer until in 1699 he became a beneficiary of his uncle, Rev. Samuel Torrey's estate in Weymouth, Massachusetts. This included all the land on the easterly side of North Street, extending from East Street around Burying Hill to Neck Street and comprising about thirty acres, as well as several smaller parcels.

Family

About 4 years after inheriting his uncle's estate, he married Sarah Batt in 1702. She was the only child between Paul Batt of Boston and Sarah Wilson of Weymouth, Massachusetts. Together Micajah and Sarah had the following children:

Samuel Torrey
Paul Torrey
Daniel Torrey B. 1703 Died 2 mos old
Sarah (Torrey) Whitmarsh
James Torrey
David Torrey
Daniel Torrey b. 1717 d. 2 mos old
William Torrey
T. Torrey b. 1722 d. the same day

Death and Property

Micajah passed away on 29 Sept 1722. [1]

Micajah Torrey and his widow (died before Apr. 19, 1765) were buried in the older half of Burying Hill. Weymouth, Massachusetts and their tombstones read as follows:

Here Lyes ye Body Of / Deacon Micajah / Torrey. / Sept. ye 29, 1722 / In ye 50th year /Of His Age.”; “Here Lies Buried Ye / Body of Mrs. Sarah /White Formerly Ye 1 Wife of Deacn, Micajah / Torrey But Latterly Ye / Wife of Deacon. Samuell / White She Died / May 10th 1763 in 1 Ye 85th year / of Her Age.

Research Notes

  • Sarah Wilson's 1st husband was Paul Batt and they had one child, Sarah Batt.
  • 2nd husband was Josiah Torrey and mother of his three children.
  • Let's take a deeper look at the will:

On Oct. 12th 1722, Micajah's estate was probated . As we're not looking at the Will, but reading through a reference, I assume a portion of his estate was split equally among the children. Named in the will are:

* the widow,
* Samuel,
* Paul: deceased, who bought during his life time the shares of his brothers James Torrey and William Torrey and of his sister Sarah Whitmarsh, and these and his own share were assigned to his legal representative.
* Daniel b. Nov 1708 d. Jan 1709
* Sarah
* James
* David
* William

On April 19, 1765, “The widow of Micajah Torrey being dead" John Torrey, Nathaniel Humphrey and Joshua Torrey, Jr. were appointed to divide the estate among the children of Micajah.

Re: The One Name Study posted on this branch of the Torrey line, I have revised to be a Project and is no longer relevant for this platform. Please remove the tag from this profile. Hopefully it will be a stronger resource in the near future for the Torreys when if you like, you can send me notice and I can provide the link which you can use if you see fit. I and my tree is actively involved in Geni which is partnered with Family Tree DNA whose systems are different but perhaps clearer for my purposes? Thank you for your assistance.

I posted a comment on Sarah Batt-160 page. "I don't know where my brother, Stephen S. Torrey, got his information, but he wrote a book "A genealogy of the Descendants of Jonathan Torrey, one of the Early Settlers of Deer Isle", and in it he indicated Sarah Batt, born 1678, was the daughter of Paul and Sarah (Hooker)(Wilson) Batt. Her father, Paul, was the son of Christopher Batt. Paul and his twin brother, Barnabas, were born in Salsbury, Massachusetts in 1643. I wonder. Charlotte Torrey Boyd
