Willem Traphagen, Jr., was recorded on the Ulster County Oath of Allegiance at Kingston, New York, on September 1, 1687. The record describes him as a wheelwright and blacksmith at Kingston.[1]
In 1699 he married Gepje Arents Pier as his second wife (and her second husband).[2] They are recorded as the parents of four children.[3]
After 1700 he settled in Rhinebeck, Dutchess County, New York, where he bought land as early as 1706. He built a small tavern at the junction of the Old Post Road and the Sepasco Trail in Rhinebeck that later gained renown as the Beekman Arms Hotel.[4] He is listed as a member of the Dutchess County militia and a resident of Rhinebeck on a roster dated November 21, 1715.[5] As of July 8, 1733 he was listed as one of the supporters of the Reformed Dutch Church of Rhinebeck Flatts, New York.[6]
