Biography

Willem Traphagen, Jr., was recorded on the Ulster County Oath of Allegiance at Kingston, New York, on September 1, 1687. The record describes him as a wheelwright and blacksmith at Kingston.[1]

In 1699 he married Gepje Arents Pier as his second wife (and her second husband).[2] They are recorded as the parents of four children.[3]

After 1700 he settled in Rhinebeck, Dutchess County, New York, where he bought land as early as 1706. He built a small tavern at the junction of the Old Post Road and the Sepasco Trail in Rhinebeck that later gained renown as the Beekman Arms Hotel.[4] He is listed as a member of the Dutchess County militia and a resident of Rhinebeck on a roster dated November 21, 1715.[5] As of July 8, 1733 he was listed as one of the supporters of the Reformed Dutch Church of Rhinebeck Flatts, New York.[6]

Traphagen-27 and Traphagen-8 appear to represent the same person because: Many details are consistent, and the discrepancies are attributable to confusion related to families moving (the Traphagens apparently moved from Bushwick to Kingston in 1664, the same year when Willem was born) and confusion between closely related people of similar names (Gepje Winne, previously listed as a wife -- which user William Fox said was wrong, was a niece of Gepje Pier, who was the second wife of Willem Traphagen).
