Richard was born in the parish of St Stephen in Brannel in about 1818, [1] the son of Richard Trethewey and his wife Catherine. He was baptised on 1 July 1818, in the parish of St Stephen in Brannel. [2]At the time of his baptism Richard's father was a farmer. [3]
At the time of the 1841 census Richard was living in Carloggas, in the parish of St Stephen in Brannel, with his parents and siblings: [4]

Richard married Mary Tresidder on 25 January 1845 in the parish of St Enoder. Richard's father was by this time working as a shoemaker (as he also was in the 1851 Census [5]), while Mary's father was Thomas, a miner. [6]The banns described both Richard and Mary as sojourners in the parish.[7]
In 1861 the family were living in Long Lane, just outside the village of St Stephen in Brannel. Richard was working as a china clay labourer. [1]
Richard died on 3 February 1900 and is buried in St Stephen Churchtown Cemetery. His wife died less than three months later, on 30th April, and is buried in the same grave. The inscription reads:
In Loving Memory Of
RICHARD TRETHEWEY,
of High Street, St Stephens,
Died Feb 3rd 1900.
Aged 83.
Also of MARY, his wife,
Died April 30th 1900,
Aged 83.
