Biography

This profile is part of the Trethewey Name Study.

Ann (known later in life as Nancy) was born on 11 March 1807. She is the daughter of Richard Trethewey and Ann Rickard. She was baptised in August 1807 in St Stephen in Brannel. [1]

On 12 May 1835 Ann gave birth to a son, George. He was baptised on 24 January 1836 in the parish of St Stephen in Brannel. At the time of his birth Ann was a single woman resident in High Street, a hamlet in the parish. [2]

In 1841 Ann and her son George were living in High Street in the household of her sister and brother-in-law Charity and William Hawken. [3]

On 1 May 1847 Nancy (as she was by now known) married Henry James. The marriage took place in the parish of St Stephen in Brannel. Henry was a labourer from Hey, son of John James, also a labourer. Nancy was resident in High Street, and her father was recorded as Richard, a labourer. Both bride and groom signed by mark. The witnesses were George Pinch and George Pollock. [4][5]

When the census was taken in 1851 Nancy and Henry were living in High Street along with Nancy's son George (now 15) and their own daughter Elizabeth (2). Henry and George were both clay labourers. [6]

By 1861 the family had moved to nearby Lanjeth in the same parish.[7] Nancy's sister Jane was also in the household as a boarder, although marked by the enumerator as a separate household within the same building, her occupation described as 'Fundholder'. [8][9]
