Biography

Flag of Hampshire (adopted 2019)
Eliza (Triggs) Hale was born in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England.

Eliza was born in 1845 and baptised at Portsmouth on 17 August 1845. She was the daughter of William Triggs and Maria Hooker.[1][2]

In the 1851 census, Eliza was recorded with her parents and siblings on Tower Street, Portsmouth. Her father was working as a waiter.[3]

In the 1861 census, Eliza was recorded with her mother and siblings at 5 West Street, Portsmouth.[4]

She emigrated to New Zealand aboard the "Blue Jacket". The "Blue Jacket" departed England on 5 August 1865 and arrived into Lyttelton on 13 November 1865. Eliza is recorded on the passenger list as a "dressmaker", from "Hants", aged "20". She was accompanying Grace and Ephraim Coffee. [5]

Eliza married Benjamin Hale very shortly after her arrival in New Zealand, in 1865. The couple settled in Christchurch, where Benjamin was operating a business making tents, ropes, sails, tarpaulins and flags.[6][7]

She passed away about 1926, aged 82 and is buried at the Linwood Cemetery, Linwood, Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand. [8][9]

Research Notes

It is not known how or if she is related in any way to the Coffees. Is anyone able to clarify? - Eliza Triggs was the grand niece of Grace Coffee (nee Triggs). Grace was the sister of Eliza's grandfather William Triggs. Palmer-9783 10:19, 23 June 2022 (UTC)

Eliza married a Benjamin Hale in New Zealand (Hale was the name of Ephraim Coffee's nephew in the 1861 census so there may be another family link there).
