Disputed Origins

A previous version of this profile claimed, without sources, that the wife of Raleigh Croshaw was a) Ursula or Unity Daniels; and b) daughter of Peter Daniels Sr and Anne Mainwairing. Other than unsourced online trees or memorial-only Find-a-Grave profiles,[1] there appears to be no evidence for these origins; the parents have been disconnected.

Others also have claimed that the wife of Raleigh Croshaw (represented by this profile) was a Native American woman, and specifically a sister to Pocahontas.[2] For the case against this theory, see Jeanne M. Roberts, Unity Ursula Pawomeke Powhatan (1610-1645), Blog post 6 Mar 2016.

Biography

This profile represents the wife of Raleigh Croshaw and mother of his children. Neither her given nor maiden name is known. There is no documentation that names a wife or children although Raleigh is believed to be the father of Joseph and Richard Croshaw. If that is correct, they had a mother. There is no evidence the wife or children were ever in Virginia prior to 1643 when Joseph and Richard are named in land patents. Raleigh's Virginia estate papers do not mention a wife or children.

Based on the ages of the purported sons, Raleigh Croshaw married about 1603 (location not known but presumed to be England) a woman who others have later claimed was named Ursula or Unity Daniels. There is no evidence yet found that confirms the given or maiden name of the wife of Rawley Croshaw.

A previous version of this profile claimed, also without sources, that she died about 1624 in Bruton Parish, York, Virginia Colony. [citation needed]

Research Notes

A land patent was issued to "Captain Rawleigh Crashaw, of Kequotan, gent., and ancient planter," about 1623. The wording of the patent has led to confusion about his wife since it reads "due for his per. adv. and trans. out of England of his swrvt & his wife, whoe came in the Bona Nova in 1620 and 25 Lbs. adventured &c." [3] The land patent states that he had been in America continuously for 15 years; no wife is named in any records. It is believed that the wife referred to in the grant is the wife of the servant, not the wife of Rawleigh Croshaw.

Lacking a response from profile managers and others from my January 2019 question, I am detaching the parents (again). Due to ongoing disputes about this profile, it is now under co-management of WikiTree's Native Americans project. Please use G2G to discuss evidence for her origins and her name. Thank you.

There is no such person as “Unity Powhatan.” Whoever Raleigh Crowshaw’s wife was she was not a Native American.
