Joannes Gerardus van Eijsden was the second of three children born to Joannes Laurentius van Eijsden and Henrica Clasina Mensen. He was baptised in Zutphen, in the Duchy of Guelders, Dutch Republic on May 16, 1772.

His godparents are recorded as Reijnerus Helmus, who stood in for the absent Henricus Mensen, and Joanna Hustink, who stood in for the absent Gerarda Mensen. The relationship between the Mensen godparents and Theodorus' mother is currently uncertain. [1]
