Biography

Joseph Frank Velten (Joe Velton) was born October 27, 1859 in Huron Township, Erie, Ohio. Joseph is the son of Michael Velten and Katherine Müller. [1] [2]

Joseph was Baptized on November 20, 1859 in St. Mary's Church, located in Sandusky, Erie, Ohio. His godparents and namesake were Franciscum Westrich and Margaretha Miller. [3]

The 1870 Federal Census listed Joseph as living with his parents Michael and Katherine, his sisters Mary Elizabeth Velten and Margaret Theresa Velten, his brothers John Henry Velten, Peter Albert Velten and Jacob William Velten and with his grandparent's, Joseph and Catherine Pabst Miller, his uncle John Miller and his aunt Elisabeth Miller on his grandparent's farm in Reed Township, Seneca, Ohio. Joseph became Francis Joseph Fritz's godparent at his Baptism on March 6, 1878 in Assumption Church, located in Reed Township, Seneca, Ohio. [6]

The 1880 Federal Census listed Joseph as living with his parents Michael and Katherine, his sisters Ida Rose Velten and Katherine Ann Velten, his brothers John Henry, Peter Albert, Jacob William and Charles David Velten in Reed Township, Seneca, Ohio. [7]

Joseph was a witness at Frederick Koerper and Margaret Theresa Velten's wedding on April 13, 1880 in Assumption Church, located in Reed Township, Seneca, Ohio. [8]

Joseph Frank Velten first married Mary Anna Simmons on May 16, 1882 in St. John's Church, Pierce City, Lawrence, Missouri. The ceremony was conducted by the pastor, Fr. A. M. Keynes. [9] [10]

The 1890 St. Louis City Directory listed Joseph as a laborer and living at 2614 South Second in St. Louis. [11]

Joseph resided at 2027 Howard Street, in Saint Louis, Saint Louis City, Missouri, in 1894. Joseph and his family were living on Howard Street at the time of Philomena's birth. [12]

The 1895 St. Louis City Directory listed Joseph as a partner with Joseph G. Schultz in Schultz & Co., a saloon at 2624 North 10th and living at 2619 North 10th Street in St. Louis. [13]

The 1900 Federal Census listed Joseph as living with his wife Mary Anna, his sons Frank Joseph, Julius Lewis, and Edward John and his daughters Philomena Katherine and Katherine Mathilda in Capps Creek Township, Barry, Missouri. His occupation was listed as farmer. [14] [15]

By 1905, Joseph had been appointed a Rural Free Delivery mail carrier in the 15th Congressional District in Pierce City, Lawrence, Missouri with a yearly compensation of $720.00. [16]

The marriage ended when Joseph's wife Mary Anna died March 1, 1907.

The 1910 Federal Census listed Joseph as living with his sons Julius Louis, Edward John, Frederick Joseph, Charles William and Theodore Robert, and his daughters Philomena Katherine and Katherine Mathilda in Pierce City, Lawrence, Missouri. His occupation was listed as mail carrier for Rural Free Delivery. [17] Joe and his family lived on the Ford Street extension in Pierce Township in Pierce City. His mail carrier route included Sweetwater, Missouri, where he picked up the nickname of "Sweetwater Joe" . [18]

Joseph Frank Velten married second Philomena Hamann Phillips on November 24, 1910 in St. Mary's Church, located in Pierce City, Lawrence, Missouri. [19] [20]

Joseph is mentioned as a son in the will of his mother, Katherine Velten, signed in Pierce City, Lawrence, Missouri, dated December 1915. He received a bequest of an equal share of the residue of the estate. [21]

Joe Velton was the informant for the death certificate of his son Julius Louis Velten who passed away on October 10, 1918. [22]

The 1920 Joplin City Directory listed Joseph as a farmer and living with his wife Philomena and his son Theodore Robert at 721 St. Louis in Joplin. [23]

The 1928 Joplin City Directory listed Joseph as a laborer and as living with his wife Minnie at 730 St. Charles Avenue in Joplin. [24]

The 1930 Federal Census listed Joseph as living with/visting his daughter Katherine Mathilda, his son-in-law Ralph Irwin Brown, his granddaughter Mary Lucille and his grandsons Ralph Irwin and Charles Richard in Long Creek Township, Macon, Illinois. [25] [26]

The marriage ended when Joseph's wife Philomena passed away on December 9, 1930 in Seattle, King, Washington while visiting her son Steven F. Phillips.

The 1933 St. Louis City Directory listed Joseph as living with his son Frank Joseph, his daughter-in-law "Minnie" Wilhelmina Caroline and his grandsons Edwin Frank and Henry Joseph at 1752 Waverly Place in St. Louis. [27]

The 1938 St. Louis City Directory listed Joseph as living with his son Frank Joseph, his daughter-in-law "Minnie" Wilhelmina Caroline and his grandsons Edwin Frank, Eugene Victor and Wilbur Paul at 3420 Magnolia Avenue in St. Louis. [28]

The 1940 Federal Census listed Joseph as living with his son Frank Joseph, his daughter-in-law "Minnie" Wilhelmina Caroline and his three grandsons Edwin Frank, Eugene Victor and Daniel Robert in St. Louis, St. Louis City, Missouri. Joseph had completed 6th grade. [29] [30]

In a newspaper obituary, it was stated, ".... The funeral of Joseph Velten, 10592 Hobday Avenue, ....... Mr. Velten, who resided with his son, Fred, was 85 years old and a native of Ohio. He was active until two weeks ago when he fell and suffered a head injury. Death resulted from a cerebral hemorrhage. .... "

Joseph passed away on June 30, 1944 in Overland, Saint Louis County, Missouri, at age 84. [31] He was buried July 3, 1944 in Calvary Cemetery, located in Saint Louis, St. Louis City, Missouri. [32] [33] Although Joseph changed the spelling of his last name to Velton, his tombstone uses the original spelling, Velten. [34]
