Biography

Stijntgen Vercoilgen, an Anabaptist martyr, and mother of Jan Vercoilgen, burned at the stake on 22 April 1569, at Kortrijk (Courtrai) in Flanders. Van Braght's Martyrs' Mirror (see image and translation of it below) erroneously gives 9 March 1569, as the execution date. The official name of this martyr was Josyne Andries (dochter), wife of Rougier van Quoilge. Although she had wanted to join the Mennonite congregation of Kortrijk since 1567, she was not baptized until the end of 1568. She was tortured on 1 March 1569, but remained steadfast, and refused to name her fellow members. Though information is scarce, we may conclude that this martyr was well-to-do, since her property was confiscated. During the execution special measures were taken to guard the site, apparently because the magistrates feared intervention from sympathizing spectators."[1]

Research Notes

"In Haarlem vonden we Josijne's zoon Jan terug...we vermoeden dat we daarmee de stamvader van een Hollandse tak achterhaalden in wiens nageslacht enkele beroemde graveurs / schilders voorkomen." [9]

``Hi Team

I am sure you already know that Jan Vercoilge originally from Kortrijke and the son of Josyine made out a codicil which was drafted in (or at) the Haarlem Notarial Archive in 1632. I would check it myself but as you know I have no Dutch. This information came from www.vancoilge.net. Sorry about the spelling. Every time I check these names they seem to be spelled differently - or is it my old eyes that are the problem. Or perhaps you have already noted it.

Perhaps a son of Jan and Pasquyntgen or related somehow ?:

1644 sept 8 Jan Vercoillie (Jan Vercolje), van Haarlem, diamantsnijder, oud 26 jaar op de Anjeliersgracht. Huwt Anneken Wijnants, van Alkmaar, oud 23 jaar, wonend op Jorisplein, Getrouwd stadhuis 9 oct 1644

from Gedragen en vastgelegd Sieraden uit de periode 1600-1650 (page 109) (opens PDF) Masterscriptie by Monique Rakhorst

Looking at it it 'sounds' like it's probably a marriage from Amsterdam (Anjeliersgracht) and he was born in abt 1618 here's the marriag record in Amsterdam..so he probably wasn't their son..we guessed the dates of Jan and Paquyntgen but still..it seems unlikely..

This might explain why they originally were from Haarlem..and thinking of it..perhaps he wa related to Benjamin Jacobs Verkolje who also was from Haarlem according his marriage ?

Maybe Benjamin Jacobs is a grandson.

Benjamin Jacobs is born between januari 1619 and februari 1620 in Haarlem. His father was Jacob. So we have to looking for Jacob Jansz (Vercoilgen). Astrid found one in Amsterdam we try to find out if this is the right one.
