Daily life with Granny Jenkins by Bobby James Jenkins
Contributed By Mike Jenkins · 24 April 2016
I lived with my gran-paw and granny Jenkins at different times as I grew up. Papa was cripple from Measles that settled in his knees when he was in late 30's and granny was blind from cataracts before it was common to have them taken off. Papa was a carpenter of a sort and always had a garden. He would pull a straight chair along the rows and sit and hoe the rows far weeds and turn the soil. Granny could keep the house and cook on a oil stove. she could light the eye with a match and a lamp by feel. She loved to rock. They lived in a 2 room house with a porch, no rails, open to the yard. She would rock and the chair would inch toward the edge of the porch. She could sense the danger and slide the chair back. When I was 13 - 14 I would borrow a bicycle and ride 3 miles to Hugley, where they lived, on week ends many times.
