Louise Hume (von) Glehn was born in 1850 and baptised at Saint Bartholomew, Sydenham, London, England on the 7th August, 1850. [1]
Her father was Robert William von Glehn and her mother was Agnes (Duncan) von Glehn. [2]
The family home was Peak Hill Lodge at Sydenham, London England, United Kingdom.
Louise was the 10th child of 12 in the family.
The forebears of Louise's father, Robert William Glehn originated from the village of Glehn, near Cologne, in the Rhineland, Germany, but several generations before Robert William was born, the family moved to Reval (now Tallinn) Estonia. [3]
Louise married Mandell Creighton DD PC on the 8th January, 1872 in St. Bartholemew's Church, Lewisham, London, England, United Kingdom, [4] and they had seven children.
CHILDREN:
It was well known that Louise's father, who had an Import/Export business, was of German heritage. Because of sensitivities towards the Germans, after WWI Louise and her siblings distanced themselves from the German heritage by dropping the "von" from their surname. (Somewhat like the Royal Family who during WW1, changed their name to Windsor!)
All her three sons served in the British Army. The two eldest sons, Cuthbert and Walter Robert survived, but when her son, Oswin Creighton, died in the last year of the war, she was grief stricken.
Louise Hume Creighton was a writer, biographer and social reformer as well as a wife to Mandell and mother to seven children. She was a great supporter of the women's movement, and gave mild religious perspectives on a wide range of issues relevent to the Victorian women. She also wrote many articles on national English history, with insights into social and religious trends.
