Biography

John WAITE was born on 17 Jan 1680 in Hatfield MA. Before his birth, the town of Hatfield was attacked by Indians and his motherMartha Leonard and younger sisters were captured. They walked to Canada as captives and his sister Canada was born there. His father Benjamin Waite rescued his family and brought them back to MA. John was like his father, much in service, was also a sergeant and commanded many scouts, was in the fight at Deerfield, February 29, 1704, when his father was slain and secured as a trophy a hatchet captured from the enemy and was surrendered to the colony. This and other things found were sold at auction, the hatchet selling for 2 shillings, 7 pence. He was often sent on a scout, at one time thirty privates, all on snow shoe, went far up country for a winter's scout. [1] He married Mary Beldon. He died in 1744 at age 64.
