Biography
Robert Walshall, son of miller Edward Walshaw and his wife, Ruth Hindle, was baptised at St Michael and All Angels at Thornhill in Yorkshire on 27 October 1827. [1] His father died in 1832 aged 30. [2]
Ruth remained a widow for eight years then in 1840 she married farmer, George Sanderson. The marriage was registered at Doncaster. [3] Their first home was in High Field Lane, Womersley. [4]
In 1851 Robert aged 23, corn miller, was lodging at the Fox and Grapes in Huddersfield. [5] There is a picture of the now demolished Fox and Grapes here.
In Hunslet on 7 September 1860 Robert married 17 year old Annie Ormerod daughter of Henry Samuel Ormerod cotton merchant and his wife, Mary Asquith.[6] At first they lived with Annie's widowed mother. [7]
In 1871 Robert and Annie were running the Crown and Anchor Inn in Pontefract[8] which they continued to do for decades. [9][10]
