Delora (Ward) Carter was a 1/2 blood Cherokee Indian. She and her sister met up with two young men Henry F Carter and Frank Baker who were [the] best of friends and had left Ft Wayne Indiana and come to the Indian Territory to seek their Fortune. In time the inevitable happened and the boys married the sisters. When the government ordered accounting of all the indians in the territory (Indian Rolls) the edict was that anyone 50% or great of indian blood [incorrect] was eligible for certain privileges, but also under strict government control along with their family by marriage. Frank and Henry were in no way inclined to place themselves under this kind of subjections [?], sothey persuaded their wives to lie and register on the roll as less than 50% indian blood. She once said of her daughter-in-law (Mabel Carter), "You are as dear to me as any daughter that I had and maybe just a little bit closer". Delora never had a cook stove. She always cooked outdoors or in the fireplace in the home.
