Sarah Waterford was born about 1843 in Tennessee, the daughter of William Waterford and an unknown mother who died before 1850.

In the 1850 census Sarah was seven years old. Her father was 40 years old and working as a farmer in Miami Township, Clermont County, Ohio. His household included five children and a 19-year-old woman named Mary A Craft.[1]

In the 1861 census, Sarah was 19 years old and living in Kent, Ontario, with her 26-year-old husband Enoch Stump. The census notes that they were married that year. Sarah was listed as "mulatto" and Enoch was listed as "colored."[2]

In the 1880 census, Sarah J Stump was 37 years old and living in Ypsilanti, Washtenaw County, Michigan, with her husband and four sons: William (age 19), Samuel J (age 17), Adolphus (age 11) and Rufus (age 8). They were all listed as "mulatto."[3]

Sarah J (Waterford) Stump died at some point before her father's death in March 1893. William Waterford's estate record listed "children of deceased daughter Sarah Stump" — Rufus, Adolphus, Samuel, and Walter — among his heirs. They were living in Lima, Ohio, at that time.[4]
