Biography

William Henry was born in 27 June 1869 to Daniel R Wells and Lydia Tubbs in South Oxford, Chenango, New York. He is the youngest of eleven children. William was just 6 days short of his first birthday when the 1870 Census was taken. His father is working as a miller and he is surrounded by four older sisters. The rest of his siblings have already moved out and started their own families.[1] By 1875 only William and his sister, Cora, are still at home.[2] Home life has changed some for William by 1880. His father is now farming. William's older brother, Daniel Ralph, and Daniel's family has moved back home. William's sister, Cora, is living with their grandmother. William is attending school.[3]

William married Alzina Thankful Hanes on 25 June 1893 in Greene, Chenango, New York.[4]. According to the 1900 US Census, William is living in Greene, Chenango, New York with his wife and two daughters, Rachel Jane and Malaskia H. He is working as farmer laborer and renting their home.[5] By 1910, his young family has grown to five living children. William contintues to work as a farm hand and rent his home in Greene.[6] On 6 February 1913, William gives his eldest daughter, Rachel, in marriage to Wallace Stevens Foster.[7] The following year, 8 December 1914, he signed the Certificate of Consent for Malaskia's marriage to Arthur Cobb.[8] By 1920, William has change jobs and is working as a Teamster for the Coal Company. His three youngest children live with him and his wife on North Chenango Road in Greene.[9] Soon after the 1920 Census was taken, William walked his daughter, Catherine, down the aisle at her wedding ceremony to Raymond Henderson.[10] On 14 January 1925, William gave his youngest daughter's, Helen Emma's, hand in marriage to Harold Darlin.[11] By 1930, William has moved with his wife to Binghamton, Broome, New York. They are living on the 541st block of Susquehanna Street. William is no longer working. William's son, Joseph Dwight, is also living with them. Their daughter, Helen Emma, has moved back as a widow with a young son, James Edmund. James is listed as the adopted son of William and Alzina. In addition, Floyd Leach, Malaskia's current husband is living in the same rented space. Also listed is a Helen Wells age 12 (see Research Notes below).[12] Within days of the Census, William stood as the proud father of the groom at his son's wedding to Jennie Hall.[13] On the morning of 4 August 1931, William was working road construction on Belden Hill. He was laying concrete forms for the new road just behind the concrete truck. Because of the noise from the concrete mixer, William did not hear the truck begin to back up. The driver did not see him on the passanger side before the concrete truck backed over him. He died within 15 minutes. The incident was ruled accidental and no chargers where pressed against the driver. [14][15] and was buried the following day in Sylvan Lawn Cemetery, Greene, New York.[16]

Research Note

Identity of Helen age 12 in the 1930 Census: I believe that Helen is actually Hazel, Malaskia's daughter by Arthur Cobb. Malaskia is living with Floyd Leach in 1930 according to the Binghamton City Directory but may not have been home the day the census was taking. Unfortunately, I have lost access to the Binghamton City Directory. If you have the source citation for this, please add or pm the me.
