Simeon Wells and Lydia (Knight) Wells were removed as the parents of this profile due to a lack of sources and data available from Gary Wells
John Boyd Wells Sr. was a pioneer. It is believed about 1795 John Sr. and his brother departed Washington Co., Pennsylvania with his father-in-law William Hawkins and two of William Hawkins' sons Joseph and Carvil for Hamilton Co., Ohio to purchase land. Below are two *Items, just bits of information when pieced together may provide insight into the lives of our Ancestors. The birth dates of John's children also corroborate the theory that John Sr. was not with Margret for several years . Item: * see below.
Rezin (Hawkins b: 27 November 1795, William's youngest son) was an infant, when his father and older brothers rode a flatboat down the Ohio River to buy land in what is now Hamilton County, Ohio. (Rezin birth in 1795 is the basis for which Williams departure has been determined, however, he may have left before Rezin was born.)
Four Wells brothers from Scotland John, William, Samuel, and Thomas settled near Hagerstown, Pennsylvania. ( John Sr. and Margaret married in 1788 and made their home East Bethlehem Twp, Washington Co, PA., near the mouth of "Ten Mile Creek", where it joins the Monongahela River which joins the Allegheny River at Pittsburgh, PA. to form the Ohio River). John and one brother (I believe William Wells is that brother) crossed the mountains then took a raft down the Ohio River to the Ohio Territory. John migrated to Hamilton Co. Ohio in 1802 and subsequently to Jefferson Co., Indiana. John's brother supposedly remained in Ohio (There was indeed a William Wells living in Ohio after John moved to Indiana).
John Wells: Jefferson Co., Ohio "Petition to Congress, 1799, from inhabitants of Jefferson County who moved over the Ohio River seeking land from the government rather than speculators." John Sr. may have filed this petition on his way back home to Margret. Jefferson Co., Ohio is located about forty five miles West of East Bethlehem Twp. John would have Washington Co., through Wheeling WVA. then across the Ohio River. This would coincide with Melvelle Baker Wells' written history of "John and one brother crossed the mountains" shown above.
