Biography

John Boyd Wells Sr. was a pioneer. It is believed about 1795 John Sr. and his brother departed Washington Co., Pennsylvania with his father-in-law William Hawkins and two of William Hawkins' sons Joseph and Carvil for Hamilton Co., Ohio to purchase land. Below are two *Items, just bits of information when pieced together may provide insight into the lives of our Ancestors. The birth dates of John's children also corroborate the theory that John Sr. was not with Margret for several years . Item: * see below.

  • After the birth of Levi Wells 15 Oct 1792 no children were born until Samuel Wells 11 November 1799. Below is an interesting coincidence.
  • Excerpt from: "Descendants of Robert Hawkins of Baltimore and Harford Co., Maryland"

Rezin (Hawkins b: 27 November 1795, William's youngest son) was an infant, when his father and older brothers rode a flatboat down the Ohio River to buy land in what is now Hamilton County, Ohio. (Rezin birth in 1795 is the basis for which Williams departure has been determined, however, he may have left before Rezin was born.)

  • A family History written in 1916 by Melville Baker Wells, (Samuel, John Boyd Sr. Wells).

Four Wells brothers from Scotland John, William, Samuel, and Thomas settled near Hagerstown, Pennsylvania. ( John Sr. and Margaret married in 1788 and made their home East Bethlehem Twp, Washington Co, PA., near the mouth of "Ten Mile Creek", where it joins the Monongahela River which joins the Allegheny River at Pittsburgh, PA. to form the Ohio River). John and one brother (I believe William Wells is that brother) crossed the mountains then took a raft down the Ohio River to the Ohio Territory. John migrated to Hamilton Co. Ohio in 1802 and subsequently to Jefferson Co., Indiana. John's brother supposedly remained in Ohio (There was indeed a William Wells living in Ohio after John moved to Indiana).

John Wells: Jefferson Co., Ohio "Petition to Congress, 1799, from inhabitants of Jefferson County who moved over the Ohio River seeking land from the government rather than speculators." John Sr. may have filed this petition on his way back home to Margret. Jefferson Co., Ohio is located about forty five miles West of East Bethlehem Twp. John would have Washington Co., through Wheeling WVA. then across the Ohio River. This would coincide with Melvelle Baker Wells' written history of "John and one brother crossed the mountains" shown above.

More on William Hawkins born in 1749 in Susquehanna Hundred, Baltimore/Harford Co, MD, d: before May 10, 1796 in Linwood, Hamilton Co, OH. A Veteran of the American Revolution William severed as a Private in Company 6 of the 5th Battalion of the PA Militia 1781 - 1783. Burial: May 10, 1796, Pioneer Cemetery, Anderson Twp. Hamilton Co, OH. Joseph HAWKINS, b. 1771, Susquehanna 100, Baltimore/Harford Co, MD d. December 1, 1815, Anderson Twp. Hamilton Co, OH, casualty of the War of 1812. Carvil HAWKINS, b. abt. 1781, probably Susquehanna 100, Harford Co, MD. d. May 10, 1813, St. Mary's, OH, casualty of the War of 1812.

Notes

Ten Mile Creek, Washington Co., PA. is about Twenty five (25) miles South of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Major Gen. Anthony Wayne in 1792 was commissioned to create the "Legion of the United States" to confront and defeat The Western Confederacy of Native American Tribes Blue Jacket and Little Turtle's tribal confederacy. He created a training facility at Legion Ville twenty two miles from Pittsburg, Pennsylvania on the banks of the Ohio River. General Wayne was deployed April 30 1793

There were two men living in Ohio at the same time (1). John B. (Boyd?) Wells who lived in Coshcoton, Ohio. (2). John Boyd Sr. Wells who lived in Hamilton Co. Ohio. Then moved to Jefferson Co., Indiana has two descendants who have done a 111 Y DNA (1). Raymond R. Wells a descendant of George Wells the son of John Boyd Jr. and Elizabeth (Graham) Wells (2). Gary W. Wells descended through Aaron Wells the son of John Boyd Jr. and Rachel (Woodruff) Wells. The DNA of both Raymond R. Wells and Gary W. Wells are a match.

There was a third John B. (Boyd?) Wells, with a son named John, living in New York, however, he was a Veteran of the American Revolution and can be found in Fold3.
