Catharina was born about 1703.
Research Notes
- Was Catharine’s name WESEL (pronounced "vay'zl"), WEISEL (pronounced "vigh'zl") or WETZEL ("vetzl) ?. Herman Sassamon Dotterer in his book on the Dotterer family, reported finding it as WESEL in the records of the Oley congregation of the Moravian Church, in the archives at Bethlehem PA. However, many names appear with alternate spellings in Colonial records.
- The only Anna Catharina WESEL findable in German records shown on Ancestry.com in 2016 was Anna Catharina WESEL baptized 12 Sep 1705 at Sankt Stephan (but Catholic, so unlikely for this line) in Mainz, Rheinhessen, in Hessen-Darmstadt. The father was Franz (Francisci) WESEL, mother Lucretia. See Mormon Family History Library nr. 949598.
- There were WETZELs in N Alsace at time of her birth, near Woerth -- see Annette Burgert's work on immigrants. Two settled Frederick MD, were Lutheran, but 3 early WETZELs show in Northampton County & in Perkiomen region near the DOTTERERs in late 1700s. Two could have been brothers of our Catharine: Jacob WETZEL (b. abt 1700, d. abt 22 May 1774 in Lower Milford Tp; wife Anna Barbara Elisabetha (b. abt 1700, m. abt 1719. One in Macungie was Conrad WETZEL Sr. b. 1697 in Walderseifer immigrated about 1720 and d. 5 Apr 1753 in Macungie Township, Northampton Co PA; he was a member of the Moravian Church in Emmaus PA; married Apr 1729 Anna Catharine BAYER b. 24 Jun 1709 near Oppau, Pfalz, d.10 Dec 1767 in Macungie Twp.
- Taxes in Frederick Tp, Montgomery Co, PA in 1776 show Michael Krause, 150 ac, 2 horses, 3 cows, 1/2 a grist mill, aged, with a crippled son and childish (senile) wife. This could be Catherina and her second husband.
