  5. Source: #S39 Page: This document is the only known written reference with the name "Wriothesley" as his given name. NOTEThe source for name "Wriothesley" appears to evolve from family tradition and wife Emma Mueller's informant information on W. C.'s death certificate. No other public record has been found showing "W." to stand for "Wriothesley." On the contrary, his marriage application to F. Edna Hinchman says W. Clifton White, his marriage certificate to Emma Mueller shows Clifton White, his babtismal record at Houston Presbyterian Church in Houston, Mississippi shows William Clifton White, and the Allen White family bible shows his birth date with the name William Clifton White. One year before his death in 1941, he gives his name in the 1940 federal census as William C. White. CONT CONT The orgin of the name "Wriothesley" comes from the Earls of Southampton in England during the 16th and 17th centuries. Thomas and Henry Wriothesley and descendents upheld the peerage until about 1650 when the title Earl of Southampton became extinct. In the US, the surname is virtually unknown, although in the early 18th century, a Henry Wriothesley held important positions in Baltimore, Maryland. CONT CONT The pronounced word "Wriothesley" has been described by historical scholars in a myriad of ways: "Rocksley," "Rizely," "Rose-ly," Risely," and "rot'sle." Take your choice. In our White lineage known to date, the name does not appear as a given name, middle name or surname until it is provided as his given name on his death certificate in 1941.

Known and Unknown Facts About William Clifton White aka Wriothesley Clifton White
Wriothesley/William Clifton White was born in Chickasaw County, Mississippi on 16 September 1871. He was the last child of Allen White and Euziede Celeste Jones. W. C. was baptized as William Clifton White on 4 November 1871 at the Houston Presbyterian Church. He was listed as son to Allen White in the 1 Jun 1880 Federal census for Houston, Chickasaw County, Mississippi.
He married F. Edna Hinchmann on 27 July 1895 at 4th District Court, St. Louis, Missouri. This person is probably the same Fannie E. Hinchman, teacher, listed in the 1890 St. Louis Street Directory living on 3507 Lindell Ave. On his marriage application and license, W. Clifton White writes that he is from Pensacola, Florida. His brother, Henry Somerset White, is living there at the time. It is not known whether this marriage ended in divorce or death before 1900.
He appeared on the census of 1900 at 1316 Olive St., St. Louis, Missouri; he is listed as roomer at location on Olive St. His marital status is described as Single. Place of birth for father is Tennessee; mother's birthplace is Louisiana. Occupation is compositor. No wife or family is listed so we presume that either Edna has died or they divorced.
In 1900 he was listed in a St. Louis street directory as boarder at 1316A Olive St., St. Louis; his occupation is listed as printer, his name was Williiam C. White.
In 1906, he married Emma Mueller, daughter of Gustav Anton Mueller and Elise Stoppelmann, on 7 June at Curby Memorial Church, St. Louis, Missouri.
In the 1910 census, he is located at 3122 Texas Street, St. Louis next door to his brother-in-law, Gustav Mueller, Jr. at 3219 Texas Street. Dorothy is shown as a daughter. He was employed as proofreader at a printing house. This census confirms that his current marriage (to Emma) was his second marriage.
In the 1920 census, he appeared 10 January 1920 at 4053a Hartford, St. Louis, Missouri with wife Emma and daughter Dorothy and son Clifton Robert.
He died on 17 May 1941 at 3436 Humphrey St., St. Louis, Missouri, at age 69. He was buried on 20 May 1941 at New Picker Cemetery, St. Louis, Missouri.
