Biography

Sibbel Whitten was born on 5 Feb 1811 in Sebasticook, Somerset, Massachusetts; now known as Pittsfield, Maine. She was the daughter of John Whitten and Jane McDonald.

Sibbel married Samuel B. Towel.

Sibbel passed away on 4 Mar 1894 in Loudon, Merrimack, New Hampshire.^[1] She was buried beside her husband at Mount Hope Cemetery in Loudon.^[2]

Census Enumerations

1840 Chichester, Merrimack, New Hampshire Sibbel and Samuel were enumerated just before Samuel's parents' at this time. Their sons, Joseph, George and James can be accounted for in this census.^[3]

1850 Loudon, Merrimack, New Hampshire Sibbel's household composition at this time consisted of herself (age 37); her husband, Samuel Towle (age 46); and their children, Joseph (age 16), George (age 13), James (age 11) and Sophia (age 4).^[4] It may not be a coincidence that a man named William Whidden (age 56) was enumerated nearby Sibbel's family this census year.

1860 Loudon, Merrimack, New Hampshire Sybil, (age 45) and George (age 55) lived in Louden with all four of their children still at home. Although, the census taker jumbled up some of their names and ages, it is possible to figure out who is being accounted for in this census.^[5]

1880 Loudon, Merrimack, New Hampshire Sibbel (age 69) and Samuel (age 77) were still living on their farm. Their son, James (age 41), lived at home and worked on the farm with his father. It was reported that Sibbel's mother was born in Maine, but that she and her father was born in New Hampshire. This contradicts all other reports that place Sibbel as being born in Maine.^[6]

Research Notes

Sibbel's headstone indicates that she passed away on 3 Mar 1894, but her death certificate specifies that it was on 4 Mar 1894.
