Capt. William Whitten was born around June 1818, in St. John's Newfoundland, to William Whitten (Sr.) and Ellen (French) Whitten.
A tree on ancestry.com indicates that he had several younger siblings:
Jane (born about May 1820).
George F. (born 1824, died 1894).
Ellen (born 1829).
John (born 1832).
Elizabeth (born 1835, died 1854).
On November 17, 1845, in Saint John's, Newfoundland, William married Anne Toucher. He was about twenty-seven years old, and she was about sixteen. They are believed to have had at least fourteen children in 32 years, all in St. Johns. The Whitten and Toucher families seem to have been Catholic and of mostly Irish ancestry, probably mixed with some English and maybe Scottish ancestry.
According to an ancestry.com family tree, the children of Capt. William and Anne Toucher Whitten, all of whom lived into adulthood, were:
John Thomas Whitten (abt 1849-1933, married Catherine J. Ward, died in Boston).
William Anthony Whitten (abt 1850-1910, died in St. John's at age 59 of heart disease; married twice; at least some of his descendants relocated to Boston).
Ellen F. (Whitten) Ellard (1851-1924, married Thomas Peter Ellard, died in Boston).

Joseph Whitten (1860-1935, married Harriet Anne Wills (or Willis), died in St. John's, aged 75).[1]
Sarah Anne "Annie" (Whitten) Fitzgerald (abt 1863-1927, married John J. Fitzgerald, died in Boston in her early 60s).
Jane Catherine Whitten (1865-1928, never married, died in Boston aged 62).
Mary Elizabeth "Minnie" (Whitten) Holmes (1867-1930, married Edward P. Holmes, died in Boston aged 62).
Peter Patrick Whitten (1869-1887, died at age 18 in St. John's).
Clara Mary (Whitten) Murphy (1873-1946, married Timothy J. Murphy, died in Boston aged 73).
William died in St. Johns on October 20, 1883, at about 65 years of age. His widow and at least six of his children later permanently relocated to Boston, Massachusetts, where their descendants assimilated into the Irish-Catholic community centered in South Boston.
