Biography

Son of Mathias Sebastian Wideman and Elizabeth Mumma, husband of Catharine Vanhoben. Founded the Wideman Mennonite Church in Markham, Upper Canada (Ontario). Henry was killed by a falling tree as he cleared his land.

"His tombstone says The First Mennonite Preacher In Canada. This is partially true, as in 1803 he was the first Mennonite minister from Pennsylvania to move his family to Canada. However, Valentine Kratz was ordained in Jordan Station, Ontario, in 1801 and therefore was the first Mennonite preacher in Canada." [1]

"The Rev. Henry Wideman was one of the first Mennonite ministers in Upper Canada, conducting meetings for worship from the time he reached Markham with his family in 1803." [2]
