Peter was a very wealthy businessman and art collector. Although he began his career as a humble butcher, in 1998, American Heritage ranked Peter Widener #29 on their list of the forty richest Americans in history, with a net worth at death of $23 billion to $25 billion (in 1998 dollars). He amassed a significant art collection of paintings, sculpture, decorative art and porcelains, including many works by Old Masters such as Rembrandt, Vermeer, Raphael, and others. His residence, Lynnewood Hall, in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania, a 110-room mansion, housed the collection as well as a private library with rare volumes and a ceiling from an Italian palace.
In 1858, he married Hannah Josephine Dunton. They had three sons. His wife and two of their sons would pre-decease Peter. Firstborn son Henry Kern "Harry" died at age 11 of typhoid, and second-born son George Dunton died onboard the Titanic, at the age of 50. Only his last-born son, Joseph Early, would survive him. (Grandson Harry, son of George, also died onboard the Titanic, age 27). Sons George and Joseph and their families can be seen residing in Peter's household on both the 1900 and 1910 censuses.
When Peter passed away in 1916 with son Joseph E. at his bedside, just three years after the Titanic tragedy, the New York Times wrote that "Physicians said old age and deep sorrow caused by the loss of his son and his grandson in the Titanic disaster were contributing causes."
