Biography

Joshua was born on 17 Aug 1797 in Canterbury, Windham Co., Connecticut.[1]. He was the son of Silas Wightman and Ruby Butts. He died on 19 May 1871 in Rome, Oneida Co., New York.[1]

Joshua Wightman married Elizabeth Button on 19 October 1820 in Verona, Madison Co., New York.[1]

Joshua Wightman was but a lad when his parents removed from Connecticut to New York state. He grew to manhood in Rome Township and learned the carpenter's trade. He followed this trade throughout his life, but he also owned a farm which he cultivated. He was a resident of Rome for over sixty-five years. Both he and Elizabeth are buried in a rural cemetery two miles east of Ridge Mills, north of Rome.

Research Notes

George Wightman of Quidnessett..., by Mary Ross Whitman (1939) on page 219 lists profiles for the brothers Joshua Wightman (1797-1881) and Josiah Butts Wightman (1800-1886). The profile for Joshua Wightman has him married to Elizabeth Button on 19 Oct 1820 in Verona, NY. Elizabeth Button is listed as born 18 Nov 1799 "probably in Plattsburg, Clinton Co., NY". The profile for Josiah Butts Wightman has him married to Sylvia E. Button on 12 Oct 1820 in Verona, NY. Sylvia is listed as born 4 Dec 1797 "probably in Plattsburg, Clinton Co., NY". Although parentage is not provided for Elizabeth or Sylvia, the implication is clear that they were Button sisters who married the Wightman brothers.[1]
