Henry Clayton "Clay" Willeford was born in 1844, the son of Hardy and Nancy (Compton) Williford, in Giles County, Tennessee, where he was raised.
When the Civil War broke out, Henry served in the Confederate Army as a private with the Tennessee 3rd Regiment Infantry (Clack's) in Company B. Source: [1]
Clay enlisted October 20, 1862 in Lynnville, Giles County, Tennessee as a Private. The Oath of Amnesty was taken on January 18, 1865.
Clay married Nancy Jane Farley on January 18, 1866 in Giles County, Tennessee. She was the daughter of Jesse T. and Elizabeth (Evans) Farley. They initially settled in Giles County and fifteen years later moved on into Trinity County, Texas, in 1881. Together Clay and Nancy had the following children:

Clay worked as a farmer to support his family. He lived to be 73 years old, passing away in 1917, while Nancy lived on another 10 years and died at around 77 years of age. Their bodies are buried in the West Mountain Cemetery in West Mountain, Upshur County, Texas.
