Biography

Charlotte was born 22 Nov 1873 in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia. Registered as Charlotte Seraphina Theba William, daughter of Stoker Solom William and Agnes Syme.

She left home in 1891 and moved to Sydney. Shortly after she left home, her fifty year old parents registered the death of a one year old girl, Mary Ann Williams in 1892. It's reasonable to believe that Charlotte left home after giving birth to Mary Ann, who was left with the child's grandparents to look after.

On 25 March 1897, Charlotte Sulaphine Teba Williams married Englishman John Atkinson in Sydney. The wedding was not attended by any of her family members.

She returned home to Newcastle to attend the funeral of her brother, John Onions Solom Williams in 1898, and again in 1900, to visit with her dying father. On her return to Sydney on 19 April 1900, she was met at the railway station by the police, and arrested. Her mother, Agnes, had initiated the arrest, claiming that Charlotte had stolen her father's bible. Charlotte claimed that her father had promised her the bible, which she took with her. Agnes insisted that she was only to take it, after her father died. The charge was dismissed. Solom William passed away on 10 May 1900.

Charlotte and John had seven children, three boys and four girls, before she passed away in 1931.
