Biography

Nancy Willoughby was born in Iowa, in November 1862.[1] She was the daughter of George Willoughby and Mary Ann Hill.[2] Her father was a farmer who had came to the United States from "Upper Canada"[1] (later known as Ontario). Her mother had been born in Ireland[1] and was brought by her parents to Upper Canada when she was a child.[3]

Nancy's family relocated from Iowa to Michigan sometime between her birth in 1862 and the birth of her next younger sister, Doratha, in 1866.[4] They settled in St. Clair County, not far from the Canadian border, first in Brockway Township,[5] later moving to the adjacent Lynn Township.[2]

Nancy married David Baer on 28 September 1882, in St. Clair County.[6] They took up residence in nearby Goodland Township, in Lapeer County.[7][8] They had seven children: Mary "Mintha",[7] Priscilla Gertrude,[9] Caroline "Katherine", Bernice Ivah,[8] Bessie Fern,[10] L. Spencer,[1] and D. Willoughby.[11] Both Bernice[12] and L. Spencer Baer[13] passed away before their first birthdays.

In their latter years, Nancy and David often had their children or grandchildren living with them. Their daughter Bessie Stoddard's entire family was living with them in 1920,[14] and in 1930 Bessie's son Earl was living with them.[15]

Nancy's husband David passed away on 9 January 1936 at the age of 79 years.[16] They had been married fifty-three years.[6]

Nancy lived with her daughter Bessie Stoddard in Stockbridge, Michigan for about five years until shortly before her death. Her final days were spent in a nursing home in Mason, Michigan, where she passed away on 15 July 1956 at the age of ninety-three.[17] She was laid to rest at Goodland Township Cemetery in Imlay City, Michigan.[18]
