The son of Miles Winchell and Lucy (Hollister) Winchell, James was born in New Britain. Connecticut, United States in 1806.[1] James, along with his older brother, Albert Winchell-880, migrated south to Georgia. Albert settled in Putnam County and James settled in Walker County. James married Sabrina JacksonJackson-46309 (1811-1860), the daughter of Churchwell Jackson and Mary Ferguson, marrying in Upson County, Georgia on December 21, 1828.[2][3]Their children included:

Sometime before January 1, 1838, he received a land patent in the Georgia Cherokee Land Lottery of 1832. James' residence was listed as "Tuggles", in Meriwether County.[4] In 1850, they farmed in Walker County, Georgia, next to Sabrina's younger brother, Thaddeus Jackson, and his family

His wife passed away sometime after 1860 and, still having teen-aged children at home, he remarried, marrying "Lucinda." In 1870, he and Lucinda farmed in Township 14 of Walker County, Alabama.[8]
Nothing is known of his passing or burial.
