Biography

Carpenter was the son of James and Ann (McCausland) Winslow.

His Great Grandfahter came to America in 1629, aboard the second voyage of the Mayflower.

He married Elizabeth Colburn, daughter of Reuben and Elizabeth (Lewis) Colburn, in 1788 in Pittston, Kennebec, Maine. Their children were: Lydia, Charles, George, Carpenter II, David, Reuben Colburn, James, Ebenezer, Caleb Smith, and Joseph Wood.

Carpenter moved to western Pennsylvania after the Revolutionary War, along with three other members of the Winslow family. He purchased land in Jefferson County in 1819 and was the first family in what is now known as Gaskill Township in 1821. Their home became known as the Winslow Settlement.
