Ira Withers Died in Military Service during United States Civil War.
Ira enlisted in the 116th Illinois Infantry from Macon County Illinois. He died in Milliken's Bend, Louisiana in April of 1863. Milliken's Bend was a supply base on the Mississippi River for the Union Army in the Vicksburg campaign. A battle was fought there in June of 1863. Ira's regiment was involved in combat from April 29-May 2[1] Ira died from disease on 27 April 1863 rather than combat. His unit later fought in the assault on Vicksburg for which 8 other members of his regiment won Medals of Honor. His uncle Alexander Withers (abt.1821-1863), in the same regiment, died the previous month also of disease.
