Biography

Elishia (later Allie, Eleanor) was born to Abraham and Treinckia Woodcock in 1791 in Fredericksburgh Township, Lennox County, probably on Hay Bay. In 1807 she married Peter Woodcock. They had ten children in Fredericksburgh, 1808-1839. Peter died in 1850. In 1851-1881 Eleanor was with her (unmarried) son Gilbert in Fredericksburgh, with other children and grandchildren next door and close by. She died in 1885 and was buried in the Woodcock plot in Fredericksburgh. _____________________________________________________________________________

Notes

Blessed with a variety of names--Elishia, Allada, and Elsie among them--she was consistently some misspelling of Eleanor in 1851-1881 census records.

Story referring to Treinka Allada Ally "Eleanor" Woodcock Death was Saturday February 8, 1885 Burial was Sunday February 9, 1885 Source New York Times Feb 15 1885 http://www.sfredheritage.on.ca/deathsobitsB.htm [but here she is listed only as Mrs. Peter Woodcock] DESECRATING THE GRAVE THE BODY OF AN OLD LADY STOLEN FROM THE CEMETERY TORONTO, Ontario, Feb. 14.1885 - On Saturday last, Mrs. Peter Woodcock, of North Fredericksburgh, mother of the Rev. Eli Gilbert and Nelson Woodcock, died at the advanced age of 94 years and 11 months. Her remains were buried on Sunday last in the cemetery adjoining Bethany Church, and on Monday night the body was stolen. Immediately upon the desecration being discovered every endeavor was put forth by the family to discover the thieves but as yet no trace of the remains has been obtained. Monday evening a gentleman saw two men in the vicinity of the burying ground, their horse being tied to the fence. it is supposed these parties committed the deed. One of the sons of the deceased lady went to Kingston on Wednesday to search the medical college, but without success. The family feel very badly over the matter. It is stated that the body of Alexander Babcock, a pauper who died recently in jail, has been stolen from the Napanee Cemetery, and rumors are afloat regarding similar depredations at other burial grounds in the neighborhood. The general belief is that the desecration is the work of American students, whose operations are facilitated by the ease with which they can cross the river in the Winter.
