Biography

Stanley was born in 1910 in Bunbury, his mother having attended her niece's wedding the night before. He was the son of Patrick Connelly Yates (Con) and Rose Elliott, who lived in Greenbushes.

He was Anglican.

Stan and his brothers attended Greenbushes Primary School where Stan was a larrikin. The classroom was built up and the goats used to get underneath the floor making a terrible noise. The teacher would send the boys out to drive them away. Pop and a mate got under there, pretending to be goats, and the other boys were sent out.

I was told he had to leave school when his father died and help his mother, driving her pedlar's truck. However, Con's obituary said he was an invalid for almost two years before his death in 1924, so possibly it was sooner than that.

At some stage, Rose opened a corner store. In May 1924, she was fined for not registering her shop business and then in October there was a small fire, started by one of her young sons who struck a match. Pop? Or were they referring to one of his younger brothers?

At some stage, Stan going out with Phyllis Davis, a local girl, but Catholic and her mother disapproved. They had an argument, although Nan didn't say what about. She got engaged to someone else, but that fell through. Out walking, they came across each other again, and something was still there.

"She just knew."

Mary had not softened. Phyl was advised that if she wanted her mother's approval (not that she needed it, since she was over 21), she and Stan would have to provide a reason, which they did, but even then there were complication with Mary insisting on a Catholic wedding in church and Pop refusing.

He married Phyllis Irene Davis on the 3rd March 1934 by special licence and the rites of the Catholic church performed in the home of his mother-in-law, Mary Davis,

Pauline was born on the 1st May. She was named Valda Pauline but one of the grandmothers, I think Rose, said you can't call a little baby Valda!

Mary brought the catholic priest to the hospital and Mum was baptised on the day she was born, with Mary as her godmother. Nan told me she didn't think Pop would mind, but a furore erupted when he returned from working away and heard about it in the pub. He rushed the baby to the Anglican priest but was told it was too late.

A son was born in 1935, and Phyl almost died. The doctor advised no more children.

I was always told that Pop was manpowered in WW2 because he had his steam tickets. However, his brother Bill was already in Hoffmans Mill and in Feb 1939, the Blackwood Times had Phyl going to join Stan at Hotham - surely Hoffmans.

Stan and Bill joined the Volunteer Defence Corps while at Hoffmans during the war.

After the War, Stan got a job at Nestles in Waroona. Phyl and the kids lived in Perth with Mary until Stan bought 13 Parnell street.

He was working for the Shire as a truck driver when he died.

He passed away at 13 Parnell street, Waroona in Dec 1970, having just returned from the trots at Pinjarra with the family. He collapsed at the kitchen sink and was gotten into bed. My uncle went next door as the neighbour was a nurse but it was too late, no matter how much I tried to make him wake up.

He is buried in Waroona cemetery, also called Drakesbrook cemetery.
