Obituary:
Daniel L. Zeigler, aged 66, the well known and efficient janitor of the public school building for the past five years, died of acute cerebral softening at 3:15 pm. last Thursday, at his home on Mulberry street. His illness dates from the fall of 1901, when he had a severe attack of grip, although he had not been seriously affected until a month prior to his death. He was sick about two weeks and Wednesday morning of last week he sank into unconsciousness from which he never revivied. He was born October 21, 1836, about one mile north of this place. His parents were Philip and Julia (Troup) Zeigler, and he was a life-long citizen of this neighborhood. He was a wagon-maker by trade. He and Miss Martha E. Beatty were united in marriage November 14, 1861. His wife and two children survive him, namely; J. Elmer Zeigler of this place and Louisa, wife of Berkey Pines of Wilmington, Del. Harry Zeigler of East Newport and Mrs. A.F. Keim of this place are his surviving brother and sister. Two brothers and two sisters are dead. He was enrolled as a musician of Company I, 5th P.V.militia, September 12, 1864. He was a member of Post 297, G.A.R. and played the fife in the drum corps on public occasions. He was musical in his tastes. He was a member of the Reformed church for sixteen years. He was very faithful in the discharge of his duties as janitor of the school house and even when prostrated with his fatal illness the comfort of the school children was on his mind. Funeral services were held at the house Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the house being crowded with friends who were desirous of paying their last tribute of respect to the memory of Mr. Zeigler. Rev. J. David Miller, pastor of the Duncannon Reformed charge officicated. The choir of the Newport Reformed sang a chant at the beginning of the services, and sang a hymn before and after the sermon. Post 297, G.A.R. attended the funeral in a body and four of its members, John Anderson, Joseph A. Wright, Samuel Noll and John L. Miller, acted as pallbearers. Interment was in Newport cemetery.
