Biography

Bernhardt/Bernhart Zimmerman was born in 1743 in Rehresburg, Tulpehocken Township, Berks, Pennsylvania [note: at the time of his birth, this location was part of Cocalico Township, Lancaster County]. He was a son of Johann Peter Zimmerman (~1710-1790) and and Ann Bricker (~1720- ) [her Wikitree profile needs work]

Tax records: In 1768 Bernhardt was taxed one shilling as a laborer in Tulpehocken Township. His named remained on those tax rolls until 1773, when he appeared on the Pinegrove roll. That year he had a warrant for fifty acres of land in Berks County, Pennsylvania. The 1779 tax record credited him with 240 acres, two horses, and 3 cattle. He and his brother John had extensive timber holdings in Pinegrove Township. His homestead can be reached by going one mile toward Outwood on Route 53002 which goes west from State Route 125 on the northern outskirts of Pine Grove. The buildings are on the south side of the road.

Military record: Bernhardt served in the Revolutionary War - Two different campaigns. He served with the 6th Battalion, 5th Co., in Captain Michael Bretz's Co. under Col. Henry Spycher. Also the 2nd Battalion, 5th Co., under Capt. Philip Hedrich.

In 1768, Bernhardt married Maria Eva Gebhart (1747-1818). The couple had the following children:

Note: the four oldest were baptized at Altalaha Lutheran Church in Rehrersburg. With the organization of the nearer St. Jacob's Church in 1780, the Zimmermans joined that congregation, and Berhnardt took a prominent part in its affairs, initially serving as a member of the building committe and later becoming a deacon. The younger children were born at St. Jacob's. Son-in-law Philip Keiser was the first burial at that graveyard.

Research Notes

Currently in Wikitree a child named Johannes George Philip Zimmerman is linked to this profile. His birth and death years (1771-1849) are identical to son Johannes, who, according to Bernhard's will, married Elizabeth Bigler/Bugler/Biechler (1767-1831). The linked profile says that Johannes George Philip married Elizabeth Hammonds (1770-1823) (unsourced). This appears to be a mis-attribution.

An extensive, well-sourced outline of the Ancestors Of Bernhard Zimmerman is posted at Strausstown Roots, at the link below

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Heinrich by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Heinrich:
