Biography

Johan (Jan)  was  born  in 1568  or 1569  at Barneveld  in Gelderland [1] Uit het ondertrouwregister  blijkt dat Jan van Wely  in januari 1597 op 28 jarige  leeftijd  trouwt  met  Leonora :  On 2 January 1597, Jan van Wely the younger, from Barneveld, 28 years old, assisted by his father Jan van Wely, was betrothed to Leonora Hawkins, from Antwerp, 18 years old, living in the Warmoesstraat, assisted by her mother Anna Wilkens. [2][3]. His  parents  were Johan ( Jan)  van  Wely  en  Geertruyt  van  Bijler (Bijlaer ?) About his father we don't know a lot, only that he owned a loan below Rijswijk en must have come from that area, mother Geertruyt, born at Barneveld around 1555 had some brothers that went to Amsterdam and were succesfull in business. The van Wely’s,  or actually the  van  Leeuwen  van  Wely’s, were pawned with two area's two and a half acre land at the kerspel Rijswijk ( the Neder Betuwe) and again three acres of land in the same kerspel. This property passes from father to son and when his father passes away around 1570 Jan is the successor.

Occupation

Jan just like his brother Willem (1579‐1653)[4]probably was in Den Hague where he was apprenticed to a jeweler or a goldsmith to become a goldsmith , diamond engraver and the engraver of gemstones. He settled after his marriage in Amsterdam where he was associated with his brother Willem. After almost 20 years it must have been tempting for the company of both brothers and Kiliaens trading company to join. In 1614 the trading-company  Jan van Wely & Co was set up [5]
Jan was a jeweler, sometimes also mentioned as banker and international trader. He also was in the art and rarity business.

Marriage

Wolfert  van Bijler  (ca. 1557 1615), his uncle and a younger brother of his mother Geertruyt, was working in the diamont and art- business, trough Wolfert, Jan probably met Leonora Hawkins, she was Wolferts stephdaughter, and they married January 1597 at Amsterdam. Death

In March 1616 the whole country was in turmoil because of the: grouwelijcke moord begaen aenden person of Jan van Wely , coopman ende juwelier van Amsterdam. The gruesome murder of Jan Wely, merchant and jeweler from Amsterdam. Two Frenchmen in the service of Prince Maurits wanted the expensive jewels the jeweler had with him when he wanted to sell it at the court of the Stadtholder. The fact he was murdered by two servants of Prince Maurits, was a great scandal in the early seventeenth century , and is well known to historians of the early modern Dutch history.[12]Den Hague March, 1616. On the landfill of the Courtyard 's the lifeless body was found of the well-known Amsterdam jeweler Jan van Wely, who two months before this, was reported missing by his family and was last seen in the Stadholderly department from Maurice at the Parliament Buildings . According to insiders at the court van Wely wanted to sell a diamond studded hat band to the governor. Jan van Welij was buried at Amsterdam (Zuiderkerk) March 26, 1616.
