Biography

Only officially recognized illegitimate child of Catherine the Great (fathered by her lover, Grigory Orlov). Alexey was raised by Catherine's cloakroom marshal, Vasily Shkurin. During the reign of his half-brother, Tsar Paul, he was promoted to Major General of the Horse Guards. In 1798 he retired to his home in Tula province, where his chief hobby was studying astronomy with his observatory.

Aleksei was born in 1762. He passed away in 1818.
